4 is the first square. In the Pythagorean table, 2 is the first number that can be divided at all, and 4 is that division carried to its own conclusion — 2 multiplied by itself, the first product a number makes with its own reflection. Geometrically it is the number of the corner: three points can wobble, but four fixed points define a plane you can build a floor on. The tradition reads that squareness not as a compliment or an insult but as a description. A 4's mind reaches for the load-bearing question first — not whether a thing is exciting but whether it will hold. Where the 3 who came just before reduces from combination and lives on novelty, the 4 reduces from repetition, and repetition is the whole temperament: the same procedure run again, checked, run again, until it is reliable. The third face, less often discussed, is a quiet contempt for numbers who work differently — the 4 who has privately decided that improvisation is just disorganization and that anyone off the plan is being irresponsible, which hardens a real gift for reliability into a small tyranny. The tradition's counsel is exact, and it is a scheduling move, because a scheduling move is the only kind of counsel a 4 will actually keep: put the revision on the calendar with the same weight as the work itself. Book the rest. Schedule the review of the plan as a recurring event, so that changing the plan becomes part of the plan rather than a betrayal of it.
